July 20, 2009
A new record low was set at the Tuscaloosa Airport today. The low was 59 degrees, breaking the old record of 64 degrees from 2004. This was only five degrees from tying the all time monthly low of 54 set on July 1st in 1950. Needless to say, this is very cool for July in Alabama and it’s nice to have a mid-summer break from the hot-sultry weather.
The sky will be clear overnight and we could easily set a new record. The record low for tomorrow morning is also 64 degrees, which was set in 2004. After another pleasant start tomorrow, temperatures will be rising to near 90 degrees. One thing we will notice is a gradual increase in the humidity over the next few days. A boundary will develop over West Alabama late tomorrow and linger on Wednesday. We will have a partly cloudy sky, with a shower or thunderstorm possible in the afternoon and overnight hours. The chance for rain tomorrow will mainly be for areas near and along the state line. However, the entire area will have a small chance of rain on Wednesday.
By Thursday and Friday we will be back in the Alabama summertime routine. Each day will be partly cloudy with highs near 90. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible after about 2:00 p.m. lingering through 8:00 p.m. The upper air pattern will remain favorable for scattered afternoon thunderstorms through the weekend. I wouldn’t cancel any plans for the weekend however, as the chance for rain now stands at 20% for Saturday and Sunday. Elsewhere, a tropical disturbance has popped up near the Lesser Antilles. This system will be monitored as it drifts towards the Caribbean. The chance for development at this time is low. Have a great evening!
The Dog Days of Summer: We’re entering the dog days of summer and we’re asking viewers to send in pictures of their dogs beating the heat. Last year we had so much fun with this and we want to do it again. We will begin showing pictures tonight. Send your pictures to: wxpics@wvuatv.com
