Sunday Afternoon Weather Discussion – 2:21 p.m.

July 12, 2009

Another hot, hazy and humid day has been felt across all of Alabama. Temperatures have reached the upper 80s to lower 90s, with heat index values near 100 degrees. Along with the daytime heating, showers and thunderstorms have developed across the state. The more organized showers and thunderstorms have remained over our southern counties. Once the sun sets this evening, the storms will begin to diminish, with skies becoming mostly clear by daybreak. Monday will start off mostly sunny, but clouds and storms will develop during the daytime heating. Temperatures will reach the lower 90s on Monday.

The ridge that was forecasted to move our way now looks like it will stay west of us. That being the case, I’ve brought the daytime highs down a few degrees. It is still going to be hot, with highs in the lower 90s. With our area being on the eastern fringe of the ridge, this places us under a favorable area for shower and thunderstorm development. We’ll have a 40% coverage of storms on Tuesday. Rain chances go down on Wednesday, with more sun in the forecast. Temperatures will try to reach the middle 90s.

A trough will move in on Thursday and Friday, which is going to send a cold front our way. The front looks to stall out right over our area; this would be a good setup for showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon hours. Rain chances will increase to a 40% chance on Friday through Sunday. Temperatures will top out in the lower 90s. Be sure to join me tonight at 10 p.m. for a live newscast on WVUA-TV.
