Sunday Afternoon Weather Discussion

A Happy Mother’s Day to the mom’s out there. The weather turned out very nice this afternoon. The rain and severe weather moved out around daylight, with sunny skies remaining for the rest of the day. Although we had numerous severe weather warnings last night, it didn’t rain much out at the Tuscaloosa Airport. Places north of town received upwards of 4 inches, according to doppler radar, and flooding certainly became a concern north of Tuscaloosa. South of town remained mostly dry, except of a few scattered thunderstorms. Today, temperatures were really not that bad, as highs reached into the upper 70s. The only problems this afternoon were in the form of a breezy westerly wind; in-fact, winds gusted out at the Tuscaloosa Airport upwards of 30 MPH. The wind will go calm after midnight, and cool conditions can be expected, as lows approach 50 degrees. Tomorrow will be very nice as well, with temperatures topping out in the upper 70s; also, sunny skies can be expected throughout the day. There will be one more cool night before another warm-up, with lows Tuesday Morning near 50 as well. Tuesday will be very warm, as highs approach the lower 80s.

Our next storm system moves in here on Wednesday; a cold front will move in Wednesday afternoon and stall out across central Alabama. As a disturbance moves along the front, our rain chance ramps up for Wednesday and Thursday, with a 50% chance for rain and storms both days. Another front will move in here on Friday, which will give us more chances of rain and storms, but drier air will work into the area by Saturday and Sunday; highs will be back into the mid and upper 70s.

Be sure to watch out 10 p.m. newscast for the latest on your forecast. Take care and have a great Sunday!

Special Weather Update/Discussion 5:15 AM

I’m glad to report that things have settled down over our area. I want to thank our staff for some great support throughout the night and I want to thank the viewers that called in with helpful reports. Right now a thin band of rain is developing over Tuscaloosa County and this extends east into Bibb, Jefferson, and Shelby Counties. There may be some thunder and lightning with this soon, as it continues to intensity. That said, the conditions favorable for tornadoes has shifted into east Alabama. A tornado watch continues for places along and east of I-65. The storms didn’t have a huge impact on the immediate Tuscaloosa area, but it was an entire different story for our northern counties. A funnel cloud was actually spotted at one point in Fayette County. Several trees were toppled and there were reports of flash flooding. For a full compliment of local storm reports from the NWS Birmingham click here.

Weather Summary: A cold front is now shifting through northern Mississippi and this should push through the area later this morning. We will have some clearing by the overnight hours with pleasant weather for the start of the new week. Even though calm weather is expected early in the week, I don’t think we’re quite out of the woods as far as more severe weather possibilities. The front will return northward bringing more unstable air by Thursday. This could again fuel some strong or severe thunderstorms later in the week, mainly around the Wednesday/Thursday time frame.

We will continue to watch the radar this morning as the front shifts east. Also, Richard will have another Blog posting later today with full details on the forecast. I did get a comment related to the weather graphics not updating on the site. We noticed this problem early last night and it seems to be a server issue. We are working to resolve this problem and in the meantime, you can go to our daily discussion page for large listing weather related links. Have a great day and happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! (Image Soure:NOAA)
