Saturday Afternoon Weather Discussion

After the morning storms, the weather turned out to be very nice this afternoon. Highs made it to 80 degrees at the Tuscaloosa Airport. Many places over south and central Mississippi reached the lower 80s; that is because of more sunny conditions there. If the heavy rain and storms didn’t wake you up early this morning, we did pick up some heavy amounts of rain. Here are some totals from after midnight:

Meridian, MS: 1.01”
Montgomery: 0.97”
Birmingham: 0.75”
Tuscaloosa: 0.70”
Anniston: 0.67”

Doppler radar estimates from Sumter and Marengo Counties show upwards of 2 inches fell in several spots. It is certainly good to see the heavy amounts of rainfall, but it looks like we will see dry conditions for about a 5 day stretch. Our next chance of rain doesn’t come until the latter half of the week and that chance doesn’t look good at this time.

As for tonight, lows will approach the lower 50s, but with sunny skies tomorrow, it will be very nice, with highs in the upper 70s. After the nice conditions during the day, cold temperatures can be expected Sunday night; lows will dip into the upper 40s. This cooler weather won’t last long at all, with temperatures in the lower 80s by Monday afternoon. Sunny skies will continue on through Tuesday, but temperatures will continue to warm into the lower 80s. High pressure will be in control of our weather until Wednesday; as the high shifts off to the east, you can expect a southerly flow to make a return by Wednesday and Thursday; the humidity will return along with a small chance for afternoon storms for Thursday and Friday. A disturbance will move in here on Friday, which will enhance our shower and thunderstorm coverage during the afternoon hours, but don’t expect much with this system as it will be relatively weak. Drier air begins to move in by Saturday, but I have left a 20% chance for afternoon showers in the forecast for mainly areas south of town. Be sure to join us tonight for a live newscast at 10 p.m. Take care and have a great Saturday!

Saturday Morning-Special Severe Weather Update

A well defined squall line has materialized over Central Mississippi. We were expecting a line to develop and there are some bow segments that will need to be monitored closely this morning. As I write this, the entire line is being warned as severe, with the threat of damaging straight-line winds. The LEWP (line echo wave pattern) will need to be monitored closely and this segment seems to be aimed towards the extreme northern half of the coverage area.. On the positive side, I’ve noticed that dewpoints are starting to fall into the upper 50s over parts of our area. The line should continue to show a weaker trend. This is becoming more noticeable along the more linear section of the squall line. As these storms work across East Mississippi we will have our alert map live on WVUA, showing you any neighboring advisories. We have all of our staff coordinated to keep an eye on this event through tomorrow. Also, in the event of a warning, turn to WVUA for live weather crawls. If needed, we will not hesitate to break into programming.
